I started building ComicSmith because I couldn't figure out what my own collection was worth. Not a vague estimate — an actual, honest answer. What is this book, what condition is it really in, and what is someone actually paying for it right now. That information existed but it lived in a dozen different places, required expertise most collectors are still building, and took more time than it should.
So I built the tool I wished existed.
You are one of the first people to ever see ComicSmith. That means something to me. This document explains exactly what you are joining, what to expect, and what we need from you.
You scan a comic with your phone camera. The app identifies it — title, issue, publisher, variant — by matching your scan against the Grand Comics Database, one of the most comprehensive comic catalogs ever assembled. It then pulls current market pricing from PriceCharting, one of the most trusted pricing sources in the hobby. At the same time our computer vision model — trained specifically on comic defects — analyzes the cover and outputs an estimated condition score and a defect breakdown showing what it found and where.
Everything gets stored in your personal collection. Your books, your condition scores, your values, all in one place.
That is the beta. Scan. Identify. Grade. Price. Collect.
It is not perfect. Our defect model is good at some things and still learning others. You will find books it gets right immediately and books where it needs your help. That is not a bug — that is the point. Every correction you submit trains the model. Every validated correction you make earns you a scan credit and moves you toward your Collectors Badge.
You are not just testing this app. You are building it.
The marketplace — buying, selling, and trading with other collectors — is a future feature we are actively designing but have not built yet. It is coming. It is not here today.
Every founding member receives the following benefits from day one, permanently:
• A permanent founding member number that never changes regardless of how large this community grows. The people who join after you will know you were here first.
In addition, founding members who submit validated defect corrections can earn the Collectors Badge, which provides an additional permanent 5% discount on all credit purchases for a combined total of 10%.
When our model detects a defect on a comic cover it shows you the detection and asks whether it is accurate. You can confirm it, dismiss it, or add a defect the model missed. Here is what happens with each validated correction:
• 1 point toward your Collectors Badge
• 1 complimentary scan credit added to your account
• Your correction improves the model for every collector who scans after you
A correction is validated when our team confirms it is accurate and meets our quality standards. Duplicate corrections for the same defect on the same book do not generate additional entries or credits.
To celebrate our founding community, we are giving away a CGC 9.6 Newsstand Spawn #1 — a genuine Silver Age adjacent key in a high grade holder, the kind of book that belongs in a serious collection.
Every defect correction you submit during the beta that our team validates as accurate earns you one (1) entry into the drawing. The more you contribute, the more chances you have to win. There is no limit to the number of entries you can earn through validated corrections.
No purchase necessary. If you would prefer to enter without participating in the beta, simply send an email to admin@comicsmithai.net with your name and the subject line "ComicSmith Beta Sweepstakes Entry" for one (1) free entry. One email entry per person. The winner will be selected by random drawing at the close of the beta period and announced in our Discord community. Full official sweepstakes rules available at [rules link].
A community-first platform where every collector — new or veteran, casual or serious, individual or shop owner — has access to the same information and confidence that professional graders and longtime dealers have. A place where condition is verified, value is transparent, and transactions are safe
Built by collectors. Trained by collectors. For collectors.
Scan your books. Find what the model gets right and what it misses. Submit corrections when you know better than the AI does — and you will, because you know your collection. Tell us what feels wrong, what feels right, and what you wish existed that does not yet.
• Scan comics and submit corrections honestly
• Report bugs, unexpected behavior, and anything that feels off
• Tell us what features matter most to you
• Keep the beta confidential — do not publicly share screenshots or details of the app without our written permission
You can reach us directly at admin@comicsmithai.net or join the conversation in our Discord community.
